Thursday night, Ditto was really restless, so the 3 of us (Gryphon didn't want to be left out), moved downstairs for the night. Ditto was really large and uncomfortable, so I knew it wouldn't be long. The pen was all set up, but she wasn't interested. She'd rather join me on the twin mattress I'd set on the floor. Dogs aren't allowed on the bed, but a mattress on the floor isn't a true bed, at least in the dogs' eyes.
Nothing happened that night, but at about 8:30 yesterday (Oct. 11), labor began in earnest. The first pup was born at about 9:00. Labor was rapid after that, with all 10 being born by about noon. The kids were able to watch the birth this time, since it wasn't during the middle of the night. It was fascinating, but A. and especially I., were kind of grossed out. Watching the puppies now that they are cleaned is much more fun!
Everyone is healthy and doing great. 5 boys and 5 girls! Ditto is taking great care of them and I get to enjoy sitting with them and listening to their little puppy sounds. It's a good thing I have leftovers in the fridge and a patient, understanding husband and kids, because I might not get much done for the next few weeks.
